April is Native Plant Appreciation month in Washington State!

Buck Lake Native Plant Garden in Buck Lake Park in Hansville was a 1.5 acre abandoned bike motocross track in 2005 when master gardener Roland Malan proposed a demonstration native plant garden to rehabilitate the area.  It took three years to organize and coordinate with Kitsap County Parks, which owns the land.  The first birch trees were planted in 2009.

Since then volunteers (including many with master gardener certification) lead by retired and active landscape professionals have joined to create and maintain this beautiful, serene, and educational space for park visitors to enjoy for free.  Kitsap County Master Gardeners, local garden clubs, the Greater Hansville Community Center, the Suquamish Foundation, scout groups, businesses, and individuals have generously supported the garden with grants, and donations of time, materials, and money.

Each year 30+ volunteers work in the garden from April through October donating 500 hours of time.  Volunteers weed, mulch, prune, plant, transplant, groom paths, and maintain the hardscape.

The garden is located at 6778 Buck Lake Road NE, Hansville, WA 98340.
