Legacies Built

Building Legacies is a non-profit organization that provides all-inclusive educational services for educators, students, families and communities. We support the education community by providing various services for students, their families, educators, and all others involved in the work of supporting children and the communities that they live in.

Building Legacies has a vision for the change that we would like to see within the various communities in Richland County. Our long and short term goals include providing services for students, their families, educators, and other community members. In order to have the type of impact that is going to be felt immediately, we have decided to focus our immediate efforts on continuing to provide support for our youth. If you can empower the youth within communities by giving them a sense of purpose and belonging, then you can ultimately motivate them to have pride in their communities, and work towards improving them. However, we will also look to provide support for educators, families, and businesses as opportunities present themselves. Our services include but are not limited to the following:

*Tutoring and mentoring services for students
*Professional development and training for educators
*Parent workshops and training sessions on various topics
* Youth and family community events
* Partnerships with local businesses

Building Legacies has continued to have a positive impact on the various communities throughout Richland County in Columbia, South Carolina. We have played a key role in providing services and support to numerous students, families, educators, and communities in Richland County. A few examples of how we have made a significant difference can be found below:

* Established Mentoring groups for at-risk youth
* Providing free tutoring service for youth
* Created/Hosted annual back to school drives in various communities
* Created/Hosted several free youth summits/conferences
* Hosted community event for youth league families
* Created/Hosted several conferences/summits for educators , administrators, school staff, and parents
* Exposed youth to professionals and entrepreneurs in various careers
* Conducted weekly meetings on a variety of topics (conflict resolution, financial literacy, problem solving, test-taking strategies, STEM, health and wellness, education, careers, etc.)
* Provided guest speakers
* Provided mentees and program members with snacks and back to school supplies
* Field studies for youth

By providing these services to our young men, their grades have improved tremendously. Eight of our members were on the honor roll for the second semester. Since we provide students and members with more one on one tutoring services, data has shown that students' academic knowledge and foundational skills has increased. Before we started the league, we had members on behavior plans. We had two members up for expulsion. Due to both ours and parents' dedication, these members' behaviors have changed drastically. Additionally, we have helped to build the content knowledge and self-efficacy of countless educators. We have provided them with strategies and resources that they have utilized to meet he needs of their students.
