In 1983 then Pope John Paul II first mentioned a 'New Evangelization, aimed at the baptized who have lost their faith. In response to that calling, a small group of people in Burlington started KCDM-LP, 98.3 FM, a low power radio station that re-broadcast programming provided by Mother Angelica's Eternal Word Television Network.
None of the founding members knew anything about radio, but they knew God would show them the way. After spending a year getting the funding in place and navigating the FCC regulations, the station went on the air in December of 2003. Supported financially by listeners and the board members themselves, they have kept the station on the air with a shoestring budget and a lot of dedication and hard work.
After several moves and tempory locations during the first few years, the station landed in a janitor's closet on the second floor of the old St. Patrick's school. The site is hard to heat and cool and is very cramped, but the space was donated so the limitations were tolerable. For a number of reasons, this site will no longer be available so we were forced to consider our options. None of them were cheap.
That process was almost like starting over again. We needed to search for a new location. There were three sites in town that would allow us to relocate our antenna, but one site really stood out. We decided that since our main mission is to spread the Catholic Faith, what better place than on the campus of the local Catholic School Campus. It was a perfect fit and all of the details seemed to just fall into place. Eventually we hope to integrate the radio station with the school curriculum since we both share the mission of education.
If you've stayed with us this far, God Bless you. The only detail left was how we are going to pay for the new tower, equipment shelter, computers and equipment upgrades we need to continue Catholic Radio in Burlington for the next decade. We reached out to the Catholic community with several events and presentations and their response was tremendous. In the next six months we were able to raise $34,000, leaving us short of our goal of $51,000.
Today, the shelter and tower are up and have been broadcasting from the new site for a year in September. Phase I is complete.
Phase II will include money for new computers and electronics needed to beam the signal out to Burlington. It will require about $8,000 to replace all of our equipment. We plan to retain the old equipment for backup.
Phase III will be an effort to create an endowment that ensures we have capital to cover operating expenses improvements in the decade to come.
In today's crazy, mixed-up world, Catholic Radio serves as a port in the storm, not just for Catholics, but for anyone who needs to find the solice provided by the Eternal Truth of Christ.
Please consider making a recurring donation to help us continue our apostolate. Thank You and God Bless you and yours.
