BHM supplied medics provide healthcare in areas of eastern Burma where there are no hospitals.

Despite cease-fire agreements with the ruling Burma Army, human rights violations such as shootings, rape and burnings occur in Burma on almost a daily basis.

Thousands of villagers have fled and hide in the jungles or relocated to camps in Thailand.

While landmine or gunshot wounds may be the most traumatic, the enduring threat is malnutrition and disease - malaria, worms, diarrhea, TB and other preventable illnesses.

  • Seven of every 100 infants die before turning 1 year old – a rate 6 times higher than in Thailand and 12 times higher than in the U.S.
  • Fourteen of every 100 children die before turning 5 years of age – a rate nearly 4 times higher than in Thailand and 17 times higher than in the U.S.
  • The maternal mortality rate is 3 times the global average – 15 times higher than the rate in Thailand - 54 times higher than in the U.S.
