We are a community-based organization dedicated to youth potential in the Puget Sound Area.
For over a decade, BYTM Building Youth Through Music doing business as WayOut Kids (WOK) has responded to the changing needs of youth and their families, running afterschool programs, summer camps, food drives, digital education and event days. WOK's main objective is to dismantle barriers to excellence in the local Pierce County community. We run STEAM afterschool programs, digital education, and summer camps for low-income minority youth, working in conjunction with local partners.
We are a Black-led nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a motivating environment for learning through multimedia.
Programs
-
The STEAM Afterschool Program – In partnership with the Tacoma Public School district, our afterschool program runs four days a week, from 3-6 PM at three elementary schools. In this program, we complete art and science projects with hands-on materials and sensory elements, learn about robotics and coding, and work with students to engage with the projects on a deep level, even if they’re behind in academics. A wide variety of activities are hosted at this program to ensure that all types of learners, including those with learning disabilities, are supported.
- STEAM GONE DIGITAL – When the pandemic hit in 2020, we took a break from our in-person STEAM programming to keep our youth and staff members safe. We implemented STEAM GONE DIGITAL—an accessible 24/7 program that is not location-bound and offers quality educational content targeted for BIPOC elementary-aged students. This program sorts STEAM lessons into digestible, bite-sized pieces with live-action leads of color who are meant to be students just like them. We have composed over 107 episodes that visit various real-life locations that youth around the Puget Sound area can visit and learn from themselves.
-
STEAM Summer Camp - This is a low-cost program meant to prevent the ‘summer slide,’ which marks a regressive decline in academic ability over the summer break period. The STEAM summer camp program has a strong emphasis on field trips to universities, libraries, and zoos, visiting guests like local artists and professors, and outdoor activities and games. In 2022, we did a total of 12 field trips over this six-week period.
