CID - Central Institute for the Deaf

A nonprofit organization

CID teaches children with hearing loss to listen and talk rather than relying on sign language. Most of the children wear hearing aids and/or cochlear implants.

During our 2020-2021 fiscal year, we served 165 children from St. Louis and 27 surrounding Missouri and Illinois counties. Based on information reported by 88% of our families in 2020-2021, 30% lived below the Federal Poverty Limit.

During our 2020-2021 fiscal year, we served the following individuals:
• 165 children from birth to age 12 in our early intervention, school and audiology programs
• 178 caregivers in our family center and early childhood programs
• 4,344 professionals through our professional development program, impacting 18,000+ children (est.) in the U.S. and worldwide

CID alumni have gone on to graduate from colleges and universities in more than 31 states and at least two other countries. Universities include Washington University, Boston University, Columbia University, Yale University, Northwestern University and many more.

Educating the Educators: Through our Emerson Center for Professional Development, professionals across 50 states and 34 countries accessed CID-developed resources, including niche educational curricula, onsite and online courses and free downloadable materials.
