Alabama ranks 5th in the country for the number of pedestrian deaths in the last decade, while the Birmingham area is 16th in the country for pedestrian deaths among metro areas with 1 million people or more. Mobile County alone had 138 deaths over the same time period.
These senseless deaths are often due to the way we design our streets and communities. The Conservation Alabama Foundation is working to save lives, improve our economy, and protect the environment by promoting policies that complete our streets and create more walkable neighborhoods.
We can save lives by protecting all users of our roads - pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, the young and elderly, the disabled, and motorists. With more walkable communities, we can tackle our overwhelming obesity problem in Alabama, where we rank as the second most obese state in the country.
With complete streets, transit, and walkable neighborhoods, we can create more profitable economic development opportunities that also save cities and the state money in the near-term and long-term.
Ultimately, with strategic policy decisions related to the built environment, we can decrease air and water polution by limiting sprawl development and inefficient energy use.
Your support helps us work with citizens and local governments to adopt policies such as complete streets that will help our state achieve the triple-bottom line of healthy citizens, economy, and environment. Please make a gift to the Conservation Alabama Foundation today!
