Canyon County Habitat for Humanity is very excited about our venture involving building affordable housing and education. Currently, we are building our third project in conjunction with Nampa School District's ICAT program, Idaho Center for Advanced Technology. During the 2013-14 school year, students from their three high schools applied the skills that they learned in the classroom to a real time project, a Habitat home.
This fall the students and their instructors will be at it again. Already the connections are trickling down to our community. Nampa Fire Department, Parks and Rec and Centennial Job Corps and their students are involved. A Habitat volunteer's son is in the ICAT program gaining life skills and now feeling connected to something bigger than his world. To bring this concept full circle, the son of a local Habitat homeowner participated on last year’s "build."
In order to provide this educational experience for these two large entities, Habitat selects a family to buy the homes, purchases the materials, sells the home to the partner family and eventually holds the no interest mortgages. To accomplish this, Habitat needs community involvement and support.
The partner family for this 3rd home is Yolanda and her 4 grandchildren. They are anxious to move in their 3 bedroom, 2 bath home and spread out. Currently they are living in the small trailer that Yolanda inherited when her mother passed away. Yolanda cared for her mother until she died and even paid off all of her mom’s expenses, since there was no other way for these debts to be paid. She is a hard-working, caring person who is blessed to be able to be close to her 4 grandchildren because she has guardianship of them. She does have support of other family members, and now she has the support of Canyon County Habitat for Humanity.
All of these partnerships are a win-win for our community! Currently, Habitat is seeking donations to begin construction, in September, on our 4th Habitat home built in partnership with students from our community. Please consider helping this terrific blend of education and affordable housing. Thank you so much for your support!
