What if you could dramatically increase the odds of helping a low-income young person realize their dream of a college education – and a better life? You can!
Capital Partners for Education (CPE) is the only organization in the DC metro region that builds a comprehensive and customized array of support services for aspiring low income students to get to and through college. In the poorest neighborhoods of the DC metro area, the numbers are grim: only one third of students graduate from high school and only five percent receive a college degree. Many children are simply never given the chance to succeed. But there is hope for those students who are motivated to find a better path.
CPE gives each of our students intensive, individualized support for all four years of high school, and the results are phenomenal: a 70% program completion rate, a 99% college enrollment rate and a 73% college completion rate for our graduates.
Each year, we provide our students with a unique combination of:
Access to High Quality Schools: CPE partners with 19 leading private high schools and two charter schools, which offer students rigorous college preparatory curricula matched with outstanding teachers and a college-going atmosphere. CPE offers each private school student up to $4,500 annually in tuition assistance and each charter school student $1,000 annually in college scholarships.
Mentoring: Students are matched with an adult mentor, who commits to working one-on-one with a student for at least 2 years. These adults help students navigate through high school and set important goals, guiding them every step of the way as they prepare for college.
Individualized Staff Support: CPE staff keeps close track of each student to ensure they are thriving in their school and home environments, creating personalized action plans to maximize their success.
College and Career Programs: CPE’s curriculum of monthly workshops are specifically designed to ensure that students are prepared to take on high school, while preparing for success in college and their careers. A suite of workshops and events help students adjust and succeed in a college preparatory school and beyond.
Meet one of our Students!
Javon lives with his mother, father, and two younger brothers in Southeast D.C. He will begin his sophomore year at KIPP: College Prep this fall. While Javon is motivated, intelligent, and blessed with a supportive, loving, and intact family, he lacks the skills and experience to translate that motivation into future success. While both parents have stressed the importance of hard work and going to college, neither is aware of the steps it takes to actually get there. Javon sought out CPE’s support on his own and has taken full advantage of an array of opportunities available to our underclassmen, including goal-setting, college visits, community service, personal development and career readiness. Javon has developed an incredibly close relationship with his mentor. Javon is extremely grateful to be surrounded by a community of people who maintain high expectations and believe in him and his ability to be successful.
We are proud of the accomplishments of all our students, and we hope that you will join us in helping even more young people reach their dreams of a college education and a better life!
