Captivate Christian Church

In the summer of 2013 a team from Captivate went to Kenya in the areas of Kibera slum (Africa's second largest slum) and the rural area of Muhuru Bay, Kenya (most South-Western corner near Victoria Bay).  

 

On these trips we discovered some of the most impovirshed areas on the planet.  Our goal is to raise $50,000 as an initial investment into what will become a multi-year relationship with the people of Kenya.  

 

Your support will provide for the following:

In Kibera (slum near Nairobi):

• A Van- With no public transportation available, private vans offer shuttle services throughout Nairobi.  Providing a van to the church in Kibera will create jobs and give the local church in Kibera an income stream. The purchase will be considered a loan and the church will repay that loan amount.  The investment into the van will allow us to recycle that money for future endeavours.  Our goal is to create sustainable businesses among the church members.  The business principles they learn as operators will help others as they develop their own business plans.

 

• Micro-Lending- We plan to invest several thousand dollars into micro-lending within the slum of Kibera. Micro-Lending is a loan to allow people to create small businesses. The loans are small but have a great impact.  Most of the people in Kibera came from the rural areas in search of opportunity.  What they found instead was a large city with a bleak employment outlook.  Many of the people in Kibera are a hard-working people who simply need a small push to help them live out their dreams and better their family's financial outlook.     

 

• Educational Scholarship Fund- We will begin assisting children with their educational needs.  Most children do not go beyond 8th grade due to a lack of financial resources.  Nearly none go on to University. We want to change that.  Education creates opportunity for these children to rise out of poverty.  We can break the chains of generational poverty by providing children with the opportunity for a quality education.  

 

 

In Mahuru Bay (rural area in the south west):

• Digging A Well-  In this area there is no clean drinking water.  The people share a water source with the animals.  Disease is common.  Which doctors collect fees to "heal" people.  It is a plight on the poverty and pulls people from the gospel.  A minimum estimate is that our well could care for the daily water needs for 2,500 Kenyans.  This solar-powered well is certain to save many lives.  

 

• A New Primary School-  This villiage rests at the base of a mountain therefore the children in this community must liberally climb over a mountain to get to the local government school.  This natural obstacle prohibits most children under age 10 from attending school because they simply are not strong enough to make that journey on a daily basis.  Ultimately this leads to kids starting school at 10 or 11 years old in kindergarden.  Most of these students do not end up getting beyond the 8th grade.  Our new primary school will help meet the need of the uneducated in the area.

 

• Youth Sports- The youth in this area had only one soccer ball that had become flat.  The young men would patch the same ball over and over.  During our trip we purchased a new ball and hired a metal worker to build goal posts on a flat field the youth were using for sports activities.  Our sponsorship will provide more atheletic opportunities for other youth in the area. 

 

• A Church Building- In order to house our school, the church in Muhuru Bay is donating their facility to this effort.  In turn, we will build a new church building at the base of the property where the main road from Tanzania passes in front of the current church property line.  We fully expect the well to draw thousands of people from all over the region.  With this many people coming to the site we believe the church will grow as people meet Christ and trust Him as Savior.  We will begin work on their new facility.
