We are the Carlsbad Community Gardens Collaborative, formed in 2010 in hopes of creating a network of community gardens throughout our town. For years, the Harold E. Smerdu Community Garden was one-of-a-kind, with a long waiting list. Our continued advocacy led to the Calavera Schoolhouse Garden in 2014 and Pine Avenue Garden in 2018. A fourth garden near Stagecoach Park is in-the-works for 2023. We now have over 400 Carlsbad residents on our waiting list, anxious for a plot at one of these gardens.

The CCGC is led by an all-volunteer board of directors of Carlsbad citizens, working to provide not only more gardens but inter-generational and educational recreation; healthy, locally grown foods; connections with Carlsbad’s history; and, an increased appreciation of our local natural environment.

Help us continue our good work!

  • Offering Monarchs a Waystation on their long journey
  • Supplementing seeds @ the Carlsbad Seed Library, and teaching others how to do the same
  • Supporting Jefferson Elementary School Award-Winning Garden Classroom
  • Education! for gardeners and would-be gardeners through varied speakers at our summer Grow-Your-Garden Library series
  • Challenging CityStuff third graders with scavenger hunts at the Harold E. Smerdu garden
  • Sharing our mission at the Farmers Market, The Flower Fields, Earth Day and more: Learn, Grow, Share, Protect.
