Dear Friends:

Thanks to continued advocacy and tremendous effort from Culpeper County Board of Supervisors and government, our school's original name is BACK ON THE BUILDING.

We are excited to participate for the FOURTH time in GiveLocal Piedmont. This year we are raising money to purchase a standalone digital kiosk and the necessary software for visitors to access all types of archival information we have amassed.

Before we tell you about the exciting things happening with us, let us first remind you of our mission and values.

Our mission is to document, celebrate and share the educational, social, cultural and military history and accomplishments of students, faculty and administrators of George Washington Carver Regional High School, the only institution of secondary education that served minority children in the four-county region of Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties from 1948-1968.

Our core values are citizenship and stewardship.

Since last year, we have improved our ADA compliance with easy-to-read exhibits that are within reach of visitors of all ages and abilities.  We have also completed our documentary, Citizens All:  The Carver Story, and are now ready to show it to the public including a question/answer session.  The first showing is Saturday, May 4th in the 4-H Room of The Carver Center.  Festivities begin at 12 noon with a tribute to Carver's long-serving principal, Harvey Fleshmon.  He guided the school for 19 of its 20 years.

NEW AND EXCITING

  • We are VERY proud to have our 4th Commemorative Calendar.
  • Containing 140 full-color photographs, of our 75th Jubilee events, it is truly a collectors item.  You may get a copy at the museum during business hours, Friday-Saturday, 11am to 4pm.  Cost is $25 each.

  •
  • May 4th, our new exhibit, PROTECTION, opens at 11am.  Carver alumni share stories of how their teachers kept difficult news about current affairs from them so that the students could focus on and enjoy their studies and extracurricular activities without the concerns of adults.  Teachers took on the role of protectors.  The exhibit is a stark look at what teachers were protecting students FROM.

  • We also have an exhibit titled, "Welcome To The Library:  Where citizens are made, reinforced and supported."  We received a large donation of books from Carver's library -- found in boxes in an old junkyard bus.  We cleaned those books, removed the check-out cards, matched photos of students with the names on the cards, and reminded all of the desks they used while reading those books.  There was even a love note tucked inside of one of the books.  Come and see!

OUR SUMMARY

The Carver 4-County Museum is one of two programs ("Scholarships" is the other) of the George Washington Carver Regional High School Alumni Association (GWCRHSAA).  Officially opened in February, 2019, and since then, we have had more than 14 in-museum exhibits, 10 traveling exhibits,

Our museum is located in the original library of the school, now called The Carver Center.  We are administered by a 6-member Board of Directors.  Since 2016, they have contracted with a curator who helps to execute our mission through exhibit preparation and marketing.
