Founded in 2012 as a grassroots effort, Casita Copan is a “home away from home” for vulnerable and orphaned children and single mothers in Copán Ruinas, Honduras.
In our community, chronic poverty is widespread, and this leads to malnutrition, illiteracy, exploitation, violence, and in some cases, child abandonment. We tackle these challenges by providing essential child care services for working moms, creating real homes for orphaned children based on a model of individualized, family care, and offering educational and professional development opportunities for single mothers.
"Casitas" Foster Homes - Launched in 2015, the “Casitas” program redefines the traditional orphanage model in Honduras by creating safe, loving families for abandoned children who can’t be reunited with their biological mothers.
Children's Center - Our children’s center provides a vital resource for single women in poverty: quality childcare for working mothers. We provide daytime care, nutritious food, clean water, medicine, clothing, education, tutoring and homework help, emotional support, and love to 54 vulnerable children from the ages of one to eighteen. Our program is much more than a daycare center; we provide a comprehensive level of care designed to meet the individual needs of each child.
Women’s Health and Well-Being Program – This program is focused on empowering single mothers and supporting them as they work to improve their own futures. Single mothers with children enrolled at Casita Copán volunteer their time at the Children’s Center and attend sessions once a month focused on life-skills and parenting. We also maintain a medical emergency fund and offer micro-loans for personal or family emergencies.
Youth Apprentice Program – This program is designed to develop leadership abilities, self-esteem, and practical work skills in vulnerable and orphaned youth ages 12-18 so that they can achieve success in adulthood. The Youth Apprentice Program places young men and women in leadership positions at Casita Copán alongside staff members so they can learn vital job skills while earning a scholarship to high school.
