Casting for Recovery is a national non-profit seeking to enhance the quality of life of breast cancer survivors by providing retreats that promote and support mental and physical healing. Our retreats, provided at no cost to the women, combine medical information, counseling and instruction in the sport of fly-fishing.
Why fly fishing? On a physical level, the gentle, rhythmic casting technique provides a therapeutic motion for joint and soft tissue stretching in areas where a woman may have had radiation or surgery. On emotional and psychosocial levels, women are given the opportunity to challenge themselves with a new activity in a safe environment, amongst a supportive group of peers.
With a focus on wellness and survivorship, our retreats allow women to create a unique support group in a beautiful, natural setting. In addition to learning to fly-fish, participants are provided with medical education and guided by trained facilitators to explore their own recovery process. CfR’s welcoming environment, free of the constraints of treatment, family responsibility, and financial concerns, helps women take charge of their own wellness.
Since 2006, the Southern Idaho Program of CfR has provided retreats to local breast cancer survivors from all walks of life. Our retreats are offered free of charge, so funding is needed to cover the costs of food, lodging, supplies, and educational materials.
Women of any age and at any stage of treatment and recovery are encouraged to apply, regardless of socioeconomic status, race or ethnic background. Participants are selected randomly though a lottery process.
