Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment (CAUSE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan, community-based organization with a mission to advance the political and civic empowerment of the Asian Pacific American (APA) community through nonpartisan voter outreach, training, and education as well as leadership development.
Founded in 1993, CAUSE is comprised of committed professional, business, community and political leaders, and has established itself as a unique nonpartisan APA organization dedicated solely to APA civic and political participation. Based in the Greater Los Angeles area, CAUSE’s influence reaches throughout Southern California.
As you already know, during this transformative year of adversity, CAUSE was able to adapt and grow programs, provide culturally aware voter resources, conduct multiethnic statewide polls, and lead cross-cultural dialogues. It is clear that the advancement of the APA community will continue to rely on leaders who can build solutions with the communities they serve, collaborate with diverse leaders, and engage with elected officials as they strive to lead positive and impactful change. In 2021, CAUSE’s programs will continue to equip these leaders with networks and resources that will: Elevate APA Voices, Prepare APA Leaders, and Connect APA Advocates.
Elevate APA voices through CAUSE’s Voter Outreach, Training, and Education (VOTE) Initiatives that continue to provide in-language access and educate APA voters about issues that impact their communities. In 2020, CAUSE held two events with then-Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, to provide information to the APA community, the fastest-growing sector of voters, about mail-in voting and COVID-19 safety protocols. Through the VOTE Initiative events and resources, CAUSE was able to serve over 6,000 people. Not only does CAUSE empower APA voices at the ballot box, but also across communities. CAUSE’s Multiethnic Statewide Community Poll series and cross-cultural dialogues bring together multiethnic communities. With over 900 people engaged in over 12 events, these dialogues allowed for a deeper dive into each poll’s results, creating space for people to build strategic solutions together.
Your support can help CAUSE build on this momentum and continue to empower APA voices through voter outreach, ensuring the APA community is informed about the issues and give elected officials an opportunity to hear from the APA community, and community building, fostering sustainable relationships and building collective solutions across communities.
Prepare APA leaders to speak out and create change through the CAUSE Leadership Academy (CLA), a nine-week paid internship program for college undergraduates that prepares the next generation to lead and represent the APA community. The CLA program gives interns hands-on work experience as well opportunities to develop their leadership skills while engaging with elected officials, community leaders, and non-profit leaders. As part of the program, each CLA cohort executes a civic engagement project that directly impacts the APA community. Last year, this internship included reaching out to over 30,000 APA individuals regarding the Census and the creation of a multi-platform media campaign to extend the reach and awareness of the value of the Census.
With your support, CAUSE can continue preparing APA leaders through CLA, CAUSE’s longest-running program. The donations can go directly to supporting CLA interns and program needs.
Connect APA advocates to each other, building and shaping needed change together through the CAUSE Leadership Institute (CLI), a community leadership and advocacy training certificate program for high-potential professionals with seasoned leadership experience and a passion for serving the needs of the APA community in California. The CLI program not only gives participants an opportunity to prepare for civic leadership but also practice it. Fellows meet elected officials, discuss policy from multiple perspectives, and build relationships with like-minded individuals in the APA community. This year’s CLI brings together 29 professionals who have already exhibited a passion for civic engagement for six months of sessions. Alumni from this program have gone on to run for office, lead Diversity, Equity & Inclusion efforts in their companies and organizations, and sit on nonprofit boards.
Your support can help grow this program to meet the needs of the dynamic landscape of APA leadership and equip seasoned leaders with sustainable networks across backgrounds.
