The Center for Independence of Individuals with Disabilities (CID) is a consumer-driven, community-based, service and advocacy organization serving San Mateo County. By federal mandate, the majority of our staff, management, and board of directors consist of people with disabilities. Highlights of CID’s work in the community:

Helping people with disabilities to find in-home care

CID recently implemented a new online system to help people with disabilities find a personal care attendant to assist them with activities of daily life. The service is completely free for both people with disabilities and personal care attendants.

Helping people receiving Social Security disability benefits to return to work

CID provides information to individuals currently receiving Social Security disability benefits to help them understand work incentives under the Social Security disability program, so that they can make informed choices about returning to work. CID’s program recently expanded to serve people living in nearby counties.

Challenging discriminatory fares for wheelchair accessible taxi service

CID filed a lawsuit in February 2016 challenging the only retail taxi company to offer wheelchair accessible taxis in San Mateo County for charging wheelchair users up to four times more than the standard fare for accessible taxis.
