We want every child to be able to be a part of CIYS!

Each season, the CIYS serves approximately 175 children and youth from over 50 different school programs.  Since its inception in 1965, the CIYS has trained over 3,500 young musicians who are now successful, contributing members of our  community.

This year our Giving Tuesday goal is to raise $2000 which will provide 10 scholarships to underserved students.

What programs does CIYS offer?

Central Illinois Youth Symphony offers a comprehensive orchestral performance program designed to take a student at any skill level and help them holistically become a better, stronger musician. Through our three levels of orchestra, we are able to place students where they will be challenged, but not overwhelmed. With our orchestral curriculum, we are able to help all students develop the same foundation in music theory, history, styles, and performance practices that is appropriate for their skill level.

Our Small Ensembles and Chamber Music program offers woodwind, brass, and percussion students the opportunity to explore the unique challenges of their instrument family. Small Ensembles include Brass Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Flute Choir, and Percussion Ensemble.  Chamber groups include string quartets and trios, woodwind quintets, brass quintets, and other combinations of instruments.

CIYS also offers a workshop series designed to help educate students and parents on aspects of musicianship not typically covered in rehearsals. Topics such as Careers in Music, Body Mechanics for Musicians, Proper Care & Maintenance of Your String Instrument, and What to Expect When You Audition are offered free of charge to CIYS students and the public.

Why should youth participate in CIYS?

Through CIYS programs youth become stronger, better musicians.  But more importantly, our graduates develop skills necessary to master any field they choose.  Studying music at a high level increases critical thinking, builds confidence and leadership abilities, teaches conflict management techniques, and reinforces that the only real way to success is through their own focused, dedicated hard work.  Our students know that they have the power within themselves to become anything they want to be.

At CIYS we believe that people make music, and music makes people.
