Chums, Incorporated is a national non-profit, founded in 1946, which provides opportunities for women to meet, to encourage a spirit of helpfulness, and to use their many talents in service to the community. We promote civic, cultural, and educational improvement; striving to enrich the lives of children by helping them to develop to their fullest intellectual, moral, emotional, physical and social potential.
The Charleston Sweetgrass Chapter of Chums is the 40th chapter of Chums, Incorporated. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The chapter began as the Charleston Sweetgrass Social Club. A group of women who gathered monthly to socialize, maintain friendships, and grow personally, while enjoying the many cultural, historical, and dining opportunities available in the Charleston area.
The Charleston Chapter of Chums, Incorporated supports the following three initiatives:
- Program CLEAN (Chums, Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitude and Nutrition)
- Program CLEAN was created for children in our community ages 8-13, who are at-risk of illness and may be economically disadvantaged. This program provides nutrition education, healthy lifestyle and food preparation workshops. The goal of the program is to prevent and decrease obesity in children through collaborative partnerships with other community organizations, a fitness trainer, a dietitian, a chef, and psychological or motivational speakers. This program has served the boys and girls throughout the low country since its inception in 2011.
- Jonathan Green Charleston Chums Arts Endowment Fund
- This endowment was founded in 2016, during the celebration of Chums Incorporated 56th Conclave. The fund provides grants to help students develop an appreciation for the arts by participating in experiences that include visual art, dance, drama, instrumental, choral and symphonic music. In addition, other creative and performance programs that are expressions or applications of creative skills and imagination will be considered.
- Durena Stinson and Carolyn Hunter-Heyward Scholastic Scholarship
- This scholarship benefits students who are entering their first year of college. The candidates are rated based upon scholastics, community service, and need. Awards are given during our annual spring event. Recipients of Charleston's scholarships are also submitted to the National Scholarship Committee for consideration. National Scholarships are awarded at the National Conclave held in October.
