Originally founded in 1976, the Chautauqua Players was named for the traveling Chautauqua shows that toured the country in tents in the early part of the 20th century. In its early years the Chautauqua Playhouse performed in downtown Sacramento. In 1984 it became a non-profit organization, and in 1985 it opened in the La Sierra Community Center in Carmichael where it continues to serve the Sacramento Valley region.

The Chautauqua offers a seven-show season of adult programming, a five-show children's season, and a five-week summer children's workshop providing training in acting, singing, and dance, culminating in 3 performances.

Season subscribers and the theatre-going community enjoy a variety of new and traditional comedies, dramas, original plays and musical revues, with a wide range of ethnic and cultural appeal. The group has been hailed by the Sacramento Bee as “one of the area's most consistent companies.”
