It was the 1960s, a time of political and social revolution. For the Latino community, a farm worker and activist named Cesar Chavez was capturing the hearts and minds of many, including four young men in Northern California. They were fueled by Chavez’s vision and inspired to create a non-profit—known today as California Human Development (CHD). CHD is a non-profit organization and a leader in the War on Poverty for nearly five decades. First inspired in service to our state’s farmworkers, CHD now serves people of low income from many walks of life—giving 25,000 people a year in 31 Northern California counties a hand up in pursuit of their version of the American Dream.

CHD’s comprehensive human services programs are funded by federal, state, local, and private sources. We reach out across northern California to rural towns and major metropolitan areas, offering a bilingual services network for Farmworker Services, Affordable Housing, pathways to Immigration and Citizenship, and Community Services. After 50 years and literally tens of thousands of success stories, we know a simple hand-up can transform a life…a family…a neighborhood…a community.
