The Chequamegon Humane Association was created in 1985 by a small group of volunteers with the goal of rescuing homeless dogs and cats and finding them caring homes. In the beginning they fostered these animals in their own homes and were only able to offer basic medical care. In 1994 support for our organization had grown and a shelter was built completely with donated materials by our volunteers. With continued support from the residents of Bayfield and Ashland counties the Chequamegon Humane Association was able to hire several staff members and the resources to pursue it's bigger goals. We now provide all of our animals with vaccines, medical care, and spay or neuter them before they are placed in permanent homes.
The Chequamegon Humane Association serves as the temporary home for homeless dogs and cats in the Chequamegon Bay area, adopting out about 220 animals each year. While animals reside at our facility they receive distemper and rabies vaccinations, are spayed or neutered, socialized, exercised, trained, and groomed regularly.
In October 2009, we began working with the Northland Spay/Neuter Clinic and Animal Allies Humane Society to offer residents in northern Wisconsin and northeastern Minnesota the option to spay or neuter their cats and dogs at a reduced price. Since this program began, hundreds of dogs and cats owned by low income families have been sterilized. Our spay/neuter program reduces the cost of these procedures to anywhere from $39 to $89 while these procedures at other clinics cost between$150 and $400. This cost also includes transportation to and from the Northland Spay/Neuter Clinic.
