During the next year, we plan to demolish an uninhabitable house and construct a completely new, affordable, energy-efficient home for a low-income single mother and her daughter. The property is located on family-owned land in Edgewater. We are enthusiastic about working with thousands of civic-minded donors and volunteers to help furnish a cohesive network of partnerships that will ensure lasting transformation and stability in this struggling section of Anne Arundel County.

The new house is for Sherri and her daughter, Mikell. Sherri is currently working as a Billing Associate, and Mikell is attending Morgan State University on scholarship. Sherri inherited the land and 100-year-old house a few years ago, but it is so rundown and ramshackle that it is completely uninhabitable. She and Mikell have been living in cramped conditions with nearby relatives. In order for them to take possession of the land, a totally new house must be constructed. Even working full-time, Sherri cannot afford the demolition costs of the old home and construction of a new one, nor could she qualify on her own for a traditional mortgage.

As a part of the Habitat for Humanity program, Sherri has already completed more than the required 200 hours of sweat equity and 50 hours of financial literacy training; she and her daughter are eager to move into their new home as soon as it is ready. Together with our partners, funders and volunteers, we will build a home that will enhance the quality of life for this hard-working family.

While Habitat Chesapeake is strengthened by being affiliated with an international organization, we are independently incorporated and are entirely responsible for raising our own funds to provide affordable housing to the Anne Arundel region. Eleven full-time construction staff and 8 AmeriCorps members will work alongside an estimated 200 volunteers to complete the project. Now we are requesting the assistance of our gracious donors. By participating in The Great Give, you will help this hard working family achieve the dream of homeownership. Your support, at any level, makes a real difference to the family and the community.
