The Chesapeake Conservancy’s mission is to strengthen the connection between people and the watershed, conserve the landscapes and special places that sustain the Chesapeake’s unique natural and cultural resources, and encourage the exploration and celebration of the Chesapeake as a national treasure.

Saving the Chesapeake’s Great Rivers and Special Places

The Chesapeake Conservancy believes that connecting people to the Bay is vital to ensuring the long-term conservation of the Chesapeake Bay.

We are dedicated to advancing citizen engagement, promoting education, interpretation and the development of the Captain John Smith Trail and other programs designed to sustain the Bay’s natural, cultural and historic resources.

We advance the connection to the watershed by:

Developing cultural and wildlife habitat education and outreach programs, preserving the ecological legacy of the Bay;

Strengthening the Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network, encouraging exploration and discovery;

Celebrating Chesapeake history through heritage tourism programs, like our award-winning Watermen’s Heritage Tourism Program.

The Chesapeake’s great rivers and the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail provide us with our framework for education and landscape-scale conservation planning, highlighting the importance of history and culture, as well as wildlife and habitat, to protect vital resources in the Chesapeake.

We promote river corridor conservation by:

Community-based collaboration to establish local conservation priorities;

Developing Chesapeake River corridor collaborative partnership programs;

Creating new protected Chesapeake lands and access areas.

We advance technological, methodological and financial innovations to encourage exploration, improve data collection and analysis, and develop new techniques and partnerships for saving the Bay.

We use innovations to:

Create new opportunities for the public to get out and enjoy the Bay, from mobile technologies to new public access sites;

Develop new ways to conserve our watershed, by using technology to identify those areas of the Bay that can have the greatest impact through conservation;

Advance Bay education and outreach outcomes by working with some of the top technology companies in the world.

We're working today to protect and conserve the Great Rivers and Special Places throughout the Bay watershed.  Please join us!
