The Chicago Playback Theatre Ensemble, or CPTE, uses Playback Theatre to bring the stories of our audience’s personal experiences to life onstage through interactive improvisational theatre.
At CPTE, actors use playback theatre to guide audience members in sharing their own memories and experiences which are then brought to life onstage by the actors using improv, movement, and music.
Playback theatre has shown significant promise in improving mental health and fostering community connection, according to emerging peer-reviewed research. Studies have found that participation in playback theatre can lead to measurable reductions in psychological distress, including anxiety and PTSD symptoms, while improving overall emotional well-being. Participants in playback theatre consistently report feelings of empowerment, self-acceptance, and relief from isolation.
Beyond individual benefits, playback theatre has a meaningful impact on communities by building social cohesion and fostering empathy. It provides a safe space where participants can share personal narratives and see them reflected by others in a respectful, creative format. This process promotes a sense of belonging and mutual understanding, especially among marginalized groups, older adults, or those recovering from trauma. Playback theatre is a powerful tool for promoting mental health, reducing stigma, and strengthening community ties through collective creativity and narrative exchange.
