Children of the Immaculate Heart

Children of the Immaculate Heart (CIH) was founded in 2013 to serve victims of trafficking. Through housing and a range of therapeutic programs, we strive to restore hope to each survivor, and to heal each person by God’s own love. By providing therapy, counseling, recreational activities, life-skill opportunities, as well as education and career support, our staff and volunteers help them recognize their God-given dignity, bringing the light of Christ into their suffering.

We operate two programs for sex trafficking survivors:

1. Minors' Program: The Refuge

The Refuge is a state-licensed Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program for minors between 12-17. Located in a serene neighborhood in San Diego County, and run by a round-the-clock staff, our program provides residential, therapeutic, and educational services for up to six youths rescued from trafficking. The Refuge offers unique recreational activities, onsite therapy and schooling, as well as a range of other therapeutic activities such as music, art, and equine therapy. We aim to provide the best environment for our girls, so they can heal bravely by day, rest soundly at night, and grow strong for their future. The Refuge went into full operation in September 2020. CIH purchased the home in January 2021, and secured a loan to finance the purchase. The full payment is due by December 2023.

2. St Bakhita's Adult Program

In St Bakhita’s Adult Program, our dedicated team of staff and volunteers provides all-around support for adult survivors and their children, including housing, therapy, job training, career placement, continued education, legal services, transportation, and other rehabilitation needs. The program is typically 1-3 years long. During this time, our clients are encouraged to grow in five areas of focus (see graphic below). Step by step, they become more independent and ready to succeed in life. But more importantly, they come to recognize their priceless worth in the eyes of God.

This year, with San Diego Gives, we are raising $550,000 for our on going program expenses. This number represents half-a-year's healing for all our sex trafficking survivors, including housing, therapy, and all other costs and subsidies. This Fall, please give generously, to show these ladies that San Diego cares about them much more than they knew!
