Since it opened its doors in 1988, the Terre Haute Children’s Museum has been a fun and exciting destination for children and families, and our mission to “enrich our children's lives through the exploration of science and technology” is realized through hands-on experiences with a variety of exhibits and programs.
On Sept. 24, 2010, the Museum moved from a 3,000-square-foot building to a new 26,000-square-foot facility located at the corner of 8th Street and Wabash Avenue in downtown Terre Haute. The new building has three floors, a theatre space and classrooms for programs, and a wide range of exhibits – including a two-story tree house, health exhibits, a water table, an agriculture exhibit, a dinosaur dig, and a live bee exhibit.
We recently celebrated our one-year anniversary in the new Terre Haute Children’s Museum, and we truly had much to celebrate! The Indiana Office of Tourism Development chose the Museum to be featured on the cover of the 2011 Indiana Travel Map, Downtown Terre Haute Inc., awarded us with its 2011 Economic Impact award, and we were named the Best Museum by the readers of the Tribune-Star. But, the best award we receive is that children and families choose to spend time at the Museum! Since opening, we have welcomed more than 90,000 guests, and of those guests, nearly 12,000 have been students who have visited us with school field trips.
It is our hope that this wonderful new facility has created magical and memorable moments and opportunities for families, classrooms and groups to learn and have fun together. But, even though we have built and opened this wonderful new facility, our work is not finished.
Our challenge today and in the future is to sustain the momentum that we have right now and to take advantage of the even greater opportunities that wait for us in the future. As we continue to build and grow, we thank you for your past assistance, and we ask for your continued support. Together we can continue to build on our past successes and ignite the generosity of even more community-minded supporters like you!
