Mission Statement

Children’s Village, Inc. provides a safe and nurturing home where children can grow and thrive in every area of their lives. We create a “family unit” for children who have been orphaned, abused, neglected, or separated by broken family relationships.

Our mission is fulfilled by offering unconditional love, a strong spiritual foundation, and positive parental guidance. We provide intellectual, educational, and enrichment opportunities, while also encouraging healthy social relationships and active participation in the community.

Children’s Village, Inc. – Our Story

In the early 1950s, a policeman in North Birmingham found a small boy wandering alone one night. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the child had been abandoned by his mother and knew nothing of his father. With no facilities available to provide care, the boy was placed in the city jail.

Mrs. B. G. King, through her work with the Children’s Aid Society, learned of this heartbreaking situation. Deeply moved, she began sharing the boy’s story and was encouraged by friends and colleagues to create a safe haven for children in similar circumstances.

At the time, Mrs. King was serving as president of the Birmingham Baptist Ministers’ Wives Study Club. She called upon the group for support, and together they began laying the foundation for what would one day become Children’s Village. With the help of Mr. Howard Long, a friend of Rev. B. G. King, the group assumed payments on 5 ¼ acres of land where the Village still stands today.

By January 1959, the land was paid for, and the group formally incorporated and began raising funds for construction. Children’s Village, Inc. was officially incorporated on May 26, 1967, and in 1970, the Village opened its doors, welcoming its first children. From the very beginning, the mission was clear: to provide a safe and caring home for children in need—24 hours a day.

Today, Children’s Village, Inc. operates two licensed group homes—a boys’ home and a girls’ home—located at 2001 18th Street SW in Birmingham’s Ishkooda community of Jefferson County. Licensed by the State of Alabama, we provide care for up to eighteen children, ages 13 to 19, many of whom have been neglected or abused.

Children’s Village is also the only facility in the area that accepts sibling groups, ensuring brothers and sisters are not separated during times of crisis. More than a shelter, Children’s Village is a haven where children find stability, compassion, and the opportunity to begin healing from broken family relationships.
