In approximately 1950 a policeman in the North Birmingham area picked a small black boy up one night.  Upon investigation, it was found he knew nothing of his father and had been deserted by his mother.  He was placed in the city jail because no facilities existed which would provide care.

Ms. B. G. King became aware of this little boy’s plight due to her connection with the Children’s Aide Society at the time.  She related this incident to all she came in contact and was encouraged by her associates to begin creating a facility to house such children.

In as much as she was president of what was then “The Birmingham Baptist Minister’s Wives Study Club”; she solicited their help and support.  Mr. Howard Long, an acquaintance of Mrs. King’s husband, Rev. B. G. King allowed the group to take over the balance of payments on the 5 1/4 acres where the facility now stands.

In January 1959 when the land was paid for the group became incorporated and began raising money for the building.

In 1967, the name was changed to Baptist Minister’s Wives, Inc.  On August 8, 1967 the ground breaking took place.  In 1970, the building was completed.

Children’s Village, Inc. was incorporated on May 26, 1967 but the village opened and started accepting children into the home in 1970.  However, our primary goal has always been and always will be to help children in need 24 hours a day.

Currently, Children’s Village, Inc. has two homes (boys and girls home) located at 2001 18th Street, S. W., Birmingham, Alabama 35211 in Ishkooda, Jefferson County, Alabama.

Children’s Village is a group home that is licensed by the State of Alabama to house eighteen children from the ages of 6 to 17 years of age.  The Village has served as a vital resource for the Department of Human Resources to place neglected and abused children in Jefferson County.

Children’s Village, Inc. is a facility that accepts sibling groups. The main objective of the home is to ensure that these children receive quality care through activities designed to ensure their total development.  Because of the drastic home situations that these children have come from, it is our duty to provide them an environment and a program that encourages a sense of self-worth and builds a positive self-image, while at the same time providing a training ground for the development of habit patterns that enhance relation skills.

 FUTURE PLANS FOR CHILDREN”S VILLAGE
