Childrens Center

One family's experience receiving services at The Children's Center:

Before coming to us, our adopted daughter had experienced a year that was more difficult than any year I will ever face. She had moved from house to house, been abused, neglected, and then diagnosed with PTSD. She did not have great verbal skills and was very hard to understand. She had no emotional control and suffered from terrible tantrums. She rejected all men and only connected with a few women. She was all alone in her mind and she would often ask me when she had to go to a new house.

 

I remember one therapy session at The Children’s Center where we were working on some of the scary things that had happened to her. Nothing much came out of it, but that night she opened up to me about some of the horrible things she had gone through. It tore my heart to hear these things, but it was so important that she was able to share that with me. Without this process I think I would have just hoped she didn’t remember and tried to move on. I am so grateful that we had the support to help her address the trauma from her past.

 

The teachers in the Therapeutic Preschool were a huge help in her healing process. They were always so loving and caring.  When she moved from the morning into an older afternoon class (the big kid class) she really turned a corner. She took such ownership of being a big kid.  She excelled in that class and really loved it. Her behaviors at home improved and she steadily gained more control of her emotions.

 

There was a time where Kindergarten didn’t look like the happy, fun, exciting time that we are having now. Without The Children’s Center, I truly believe that she would struggle for years to come. The preschool worked every single day with her and they were the most patient, gentle people I’ve ever met. She is now a happy little girl who will be successful in life. This journey has been a huge challenge but I am so grateful that we had The Children’s Center helping us through it.”
