Welcome to Giving Day for Apes - October 3rd 2023

We are very pleased to participate at another Giving Day for Apes this year again! Last year,  thanks to all of you, we raised $8,660 to support the Chimpanzee Conservation Center's activities. You are the best!  Your support allowed us to care for the CCC residents and provide all our orphans with nutricious locally sourced food.

We are very excited to participate in this amazing campaign again this year.  Of course, you can make a donation before or after October 3rd, however, all donations made on that day can potentially multiply the CCC's funds by helping us win prizes, thanks to the Global Federation of Sanctuary Animals (GFAS) and its supporters.  All the funds raised will go towards the chimpanzees' care. The CCC currently cares for 63 chimpanzees ranging from one year old to 30 years old and monitor seven released adult chimpanzees (like Chloe) and their offsprings.

THE WESTERNED CHIMPANZEE: OUR CLOSEST RELATIVE, YET ON THE BRINK OF EXTINCTION.

Chimpanzees have already dissapeared from 4 African countries which were originally within their range. Massive deforestation, animal trafficking, and diseases transferred from humans have dangerously accelerated their decline. The subspecies found in Guinea is the most endangered and is considered critically endangered.

Guinea remains the country with the largest population of chimpanzees in West Africa, yet it's also a major hub for animal trafficking. Thus, our center's presence is crucial for the conservation of chimpanzees.

The Chimpanzee Conservation Center rescues and rehabilitates orphaned chimpanzees victimed of the pet trade, hunting or human-chimpanzees conflicts. They are confiscated by the authorities and placed under the CCC care. The center's existence encourages authorities to enforce the laws and combat trafficking, further protecting wild chimpanzee populations. Chimpanzees, being incredibly intelligent and strong creatures, cannot be housed anywhere else as there are no other suitable facilities.

We are currently the only sanctuary releasing chimps back into the wild. Finding a viable territory is challenging and rehabilitating the chimps takes several years. By protecting large territories, we are also safeguarding the myriad flora and fauna, which are often threatened but lesser-known.

RELEASE OR NOT RELEASE?

Releasing chimps into the wild has its own costs. After their release, we track them using telemetry to ensure their successful reintroduction. We also use boats during the rainy season, hire trackers, and more. Thanks to these efforts, in 2023, we were able to track two females released in late 2022 and observed that they likely joined wild chimp groups. Check Chloe' story below. These achievements wouldn't be possible without everyone's support, near or far.

OUR 2023 SPOTLIGHT IS CHLOE

NEW RESCUE:

Since last Giving Day for Apes, we welcomed two new orphans Malo and Doura.

Malo:

He is a two year old little male, confiscated in Conakry and sent to the CCC by the authorities in April 2023.

After his quarantine: he did, as all the other chimpanzees, time in the forest BUT after a week weeks, he escaped constantly to go visit Simon, Oumou and Nana...

So he now living with the small group and he is HAPPY!

Doura:

Doura came to us only a few months ago. He is slowly being introduced to the other young chimpanzees. Cesar is acting big brother to this lost soul.

Cesar and Doura

The cost of taking care of these chimps is substantial... Baby chimps are fed with infant formula, and older ones eat several tons of fruits and vegetables every week.

Your help and support is never too small:

We pride ourselves on working closely with local communities. Our caregivers spend time with each chimp, and we employ over 30 national staff.

Throughout October 3rd, we will give you a peak behind the scene and we have prepared posts for every hour with pictures and videos we never published. Please share widely!

WE ARE COUNTING ON YOU

THANK YOU!
