The Christian Quilt Guild is dedicated to sharing our Christian faith through using our God-given gifts and talents to serve God, and to serve those in need. The Guild encourages spiritual and personal growth through developing, educating, and encouraging the skill and art of quilting and sewing.
The Christian Quilt Guild (CGQ) was originally founded out of a concern who might not have enough heat in their homes (low-income homes) during the frigid winter months. The concept was to make a warm and snuggly quilt for as many children a year as was possible - providing warmth and a warm hug. Since the inception, the CQG has donated over 800 hand-made and machine sewn quilts to keep children warm. While the goals have expanded, the heart of the organization is to provide quilts to those in need.
The Christian Quilt Guild has about 40 members (women and men) who sew quilts that are donated to the East Texas Community. Each year donations are made to children, women who are in crisis, and Veterans who have valiantly served our country and were wounded in the line of duty. Last year, the Guild donated over 185 quilts to the Angel Tree Project with Salvation Army and supported the Wounded Warriors of East Texas by supplying a quilt for each family that attends the weekend retreats. The Guild also donates quilts to Hospice of East Texas.
Each quilt takes an average of 15-30 hours of work to complete. Each quilt has 3 layers of materials: Top and Back from fabric and the middle, called batting. The top is pieced together with fabric that is cut and sewn to create the exquisite quilt. The back is sewn together, then the quilt is "sandwiched" and put on a long arming machine to be stitched together followed by binding the edges for a finished project.
