Cienega Watershed Partnership

A nonprofit organization

$660 raised by 15 donors

Imagine that: one hundred years from now a person visits the Cienega Watershed and watches an antelope wild her newborn fawn, hears the wind blowing through hundred-foot cottonwoods along Cienega Creek or sits on a hilltop gazing across intact native grasslands to the saguaro-studded Rincon Mountains beyond.  Imagine that:  unseen, beneath the feet of this visitor, water flows underground, supplying aquifers throughout the Watershed as well as to Tucson, Arizona.

You can experience this today and the Cienega Watershed Partnership works so that others can experience this in 100 years.

CWP received the Secretary of the Interior's Partners for Conservation Award because of our work with partners to preserve the resources, connect people with its history, prepare youth for leadership roles in the environment, and prepare land owners and managers for the climate changes already being experienced in the Watershed.   More?  go to www.cienega.org

Tom Meixner Fund: Dr. Thomas Meixner, Chair of the Cienega Watershed Partnership, passed away unexpectedly on October 5, 2022 in Tucson, Arizona , a gunshot victim.  We (CWP) will be forever grateful for Tom’s leadership and tireless advocacy of the unique and highly valued Cienega Watershed. Friends and colleagues of his have begun funding and planning for a Tom Meixner Memorial in the Cienega Watershed. Ideas range from a trail head to a youth award. Funds are needed for this project.

Virtual Tour of the Cienega Watershed: A tour has been 95% developed for anyone to use with an internet link. Designed as a driving tour, 22 stops are identified covering mining to ranching and antelope to sacaton grass. Multiple CWP partners have funded most of the $18,500 costs for a 3-year program but we are short $1,248. We'll be releasing the tour for public use early in 2023.  A Spanish Translation is an additional $3,000 need.

The Cienega Timeline Project: The Timeline is an exciting effort by CWP and partners to capture the major events in the watershed and develop an interactive timeline that the public, teachers, researchers, students, etc. can then use. About 200 events have been declared the most significant of the 900 events recorded. We'd like to publish an abbreviated timeline for the 200 by brochure, fact sheet or teacher handout but need to cover the publishing costs. Around $1,000 needed.
