Founded 100 years ago by first daughter-in-law, Helen Newell Garfield, Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center is dedicated to serving the diverse communication needs of those with speech-language and reading disorder, hearing loss and deafness. Each year, we serve close to 10,000 Greater Clevelanders at our four office locations, though remote services, at schools and Head Start sites, providing free and reduced cost care to those who need it most.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had the effect of dramatically narrowing life for many in our community. The disconnection many of us feel as we stay home from jobs, family gatherings and social activities is largely an inconvenience at this stage. However, as resources become scarce and incomes dwindle, health and wellbeing are also at stake. The tightening of our daily sphere is actually an experience that many Clevelanders have already experienced—not because of a virus, but because of hearing loss, deafness or communication disorder that robs them of information, independence and connection.

Founded in 1921, Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center is the nation’s oldest center of its kind and Northeast Ohio’s only nonprofit dedicated solely to communication health and access.  CHSC is proud to have served thousands of individuals in 2020 through three main programs:

  1. Through Audiology, CHSC provides hearing screenings, hearing aid fittings, hearing loss prevention education and services to families of infants born with hearing loss.
  2. The Speech, Language and Learning Program offers screenings, assessments, early literacy education and speech therapy for children in schools, Head Start programs and at our office locations.
  3. Finally, through the Community Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, CHSC offers social services to the deaf community to ensure health, safety and access to education, work and other opportunities.

Through all these programs, CHSC helps ensure all of our region’s residents have access to the essential connections healthy communication makes possible.

Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center serves our region’s most vulnerable individuals through clinical care, social services, and advocacy to ensure all needs are met, regardless of a person’s income level, disability or language. Your support will allow us to expand our reach in our second century so all Greater Clevelanders can connect through communication!
