The rise of fake news is a threat to democracy. While there is plenty of blame to go around for the unprecedented level of misinformation spewed in the social media, the increase in fake news and gossips is an indictment on real newsrooms. Some journalists have peddled sensational, unfounded, and inaccurate stories in the mainstream media with little or no consequence. 

Therefore, the spread of fake news is indirectly related to proven cases of sloppiness and professional negligence on the part of journalists.

It is common knowledge that information is the lifeblood of democracy, and as such misinformation, disinformation, or propaganda exemplified in fake news could undermine democracy and trust in public administration. Accurate or inaccurate information depending on the level processing by target audiences could make all the difference between war and peace.

In support of our mission of promoting “ a conflict-resolving media practice around the world," we are poised to conduct periodic news literacy campaign to educate members of the public to become critical information consumers as well as news professionals to be conscious of their enormous responsibilities in nursing and nurturing democracy at all levels.
