Community Nutrition Partnership

CNP uses market based approaches to provide local, healthy food to people of all incomes and backgrounds.

What CNP does for communities in North Carolina:

Veggie Van travels directly to neighborhoods with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables to offer boxes of North Carolina-grown produce at reduced cost. Veggie Van not only makes purchasing more fruits and vegetables convenient and affordable, it also helps customers learn how to better use their produce with weekly cooking demonstrations, free recipes and other educational materials. We are excited to report that Veggie Van is making an impact!  In a recent survey, Veggie Van customers in one affordable housing community reported that they increased their consumption of fruits and vegetables by two servings per day after participating in Veggie Van.  Currently, we have two Veggie Van locations in Orange County. With your help we can expand to 8 new sites by the end of 2013.

Cooking Matters is a national program that teaches and empowers people to eat healthy through interactive nutrition and cooking classes.  This year CNP ran Cooking Matters classes for Adults, Teens and Families in four low-income communities.  With your help we can expand this program to more sites and include grocery store and farmers’ market tours and classes for pre-school children.

How we plan to expand our impact to other areas:

We are working with researchers at the University of North Carolina to develop and test a system for getting more local sustainable food into underserved communities.  We are partnering with nonprofits and organizations in other areas of the state who will implement their own versions of Veggie Van. With your help we can expand the Veggie Van program across the state and eventually across the country.
