Our mission is to keep people as healthy, active, and independent as possible when advancing years or physical/mental conditions call for extra care and attention. Coastside Adult Day Health Center strives to help its participants restore and maintain their physical and mental health while enhancing the quality of life for our participants and their caregivers.

“In the outside world there is little recognition of the fact that both the person with dementia and those close to them are going through a grieving process. Dementia is a complete catastrophe. Both the person with dementia and their family deserve to be well supported. The recognition and admission of mental suffering can make life livable again.” Bere Miesen

Our staff of licensed clinicians, professionals and program aides works in cooperation with the participants, their caregivers, and their personal physicians in an atmosphere that is both caring and supportive.

In as little as three months, twice per week participation in Adult Day Health Care significantly slows the progression of cognitive decline in individuals with cognitive impairment associated with dementia.  In fact, when compared with non-users of Adult Day Health Care,

Caregivers Experienced:

  • Reduction in difficult to manage care recipient behaviors
  • Fewer hours managing memory difficulties
  • Less burden, strain and worry
  • Fewer recreational restrictions and conflicts between caregiving and other responsibilities
  • A better relationship with the care recipient
  • Lower level of depression, anger and perceived overload.

Participants Experienced:

  • Delayed nursing home placement
  • Attenuation of cognitive delcine associated with institutionalization
  • Better medication and dietary compliance
  • Reduced levels of depression and anxiety
  • A renewed sense or purpose

We enrolled an 83-year-old Chinese woman with a diagnosis of late stage Alzheimer’s.  She primarily spoke Chinese, but understood English. Her cognitive functioning was very poor, she would not verbalize her needs and her affect was flat. She needed prompting just to eat. The family was responsible for her 24-hour care and desperately needed respite. After approximately two weeks of therapy and person centered care, she began to respond. She engaged in the activities, began speaking, and her flat expression changed to a smile. She was enjoying her self. The family was thrilled and felt better about getting the respite they needed and therefore they were able to remain caring for her at home. CADHC meets a dual purpose; we care for both the client and the family.
