We are a new branch of educational excellence in Louisville, KY. As an HBCU-inspired school, we empower our Trailblazers to embody the traits of the word “trailblazer”; to go into the world and exhibit tenacity, innovation, confidence, and integrity. We envision ourselves as trailblazers in closing the achievement gap with an ultimate goal to advance academic equity for all students, especially the underserved population. We believe the achievement gap is not an intellectual gap, but a gap in resources, access, and opportunities.
This school year, our founder, a Howard University alum, designed a curriculum that focuses on historically Black colleges and universities. The curriculum teaches the history, the significance, the impact and builds a love for HBCUs. HBCUs are known for fostering an environment where students learn culture, are immersed in culture, create culture, and impact culture. It's a place where students are free to be who they are, and experience a sense of belonging.
Now in our third year of existence, we’ve provided quality education to over 60 students and resources to their families from age three to 8th grade from 26 zip codes, including Mt. Washington, KY and southern Indiana through our summer camps and full day school year program. We have an aggressive plan to add grade level bands every school year until we become a PreK-3 through 12th grade school and anticipate broadening and strengthening our reach to provide this experience to at least 100 additional students and families by 2024.
Our tuition is relatively low compared to other full time and even part time private school programs, with an expected financial contribution of $7200 annually. Funding received from tuition is spent on the salary of qualified educators to teach our students. The unfortunate assumption that we tackle is that parents who decide private school is the best fit for their child are in the financial predicament to make that choice. For many Trailblazer families, the decision for private schools comes from a desire for an alternative; something that will meet their child’s needs in an intentional way and to access programming not available elsewhere. Families have chosen our school because they want their child to be educated in a place and space where they are loved, respected, and heard.
Not only do we provide a rigorous educational component focused on the philosophy of Reggio Emilia, we are also heavily invested in our families and recognize our parents as the first teacher. Monthly, we hold activities that engage our families. Daily, we involve families in their child’s learning. Becoming a part of the Trailblazer family is not just for the student, but for the family in totality.
Throughout the week, our afternoons are focused on extracurricular programming and comprehensive learning experiences. Our programming includes Black History, art, physical education/health & wellness, Spanish, dance, step, technology, tennis, poetry, Strings, and music, as "specials". Our future-driven programming is project-based, comprehensive learning experiences. That programming includes, journalism, medicine, politics, finance, and entrepreneurship.
