Today, only 9 out of 100 kids living in low-income communities in our country can expect to get a college degree, compared with 84 out of 100 high-income students. College Summit is working to change that. In partnership with high schools, we work with students and teachers to create a college-going culture, and to increase the number of low-income youth going on to college and career.
Why is this important? With a college degree, you have a chance to earn on average $1.5 million more than those who only have a high school degree. And you'll have a better chance of getting and keeping a job in today's global economy, as a majority of jobs will require some post-high school education.
How does College Summit create college-going culture and increase college enrollment? By leveraging the power of peer influence. We develop teams of high school juniors and seniors – Peer Leaders – who are trained, along with their teachers, to help their peers make the connection between high school, college and career, and motivate them to pursue degrees in higher education. Teachers who teach our 9th-12th grade curriculum are supported by the Peer Leaders, who run college application, financial aid, and education and career planning campaigns in their schools.
During the 2015-16 school year, 3,000 9th-12th grade students in the National Capital Region, including over 100 Peer Leaders at 20 high schools in the District of Columbia, Prince George's County, and Baltimore City, Maryland, and Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia- benefitted from College Summit's program.
