Colorfully Candid Paradigm

Looking in, you would have thought that I was the model student in high school. I made excellent grades, held a lead role in a play hosted by the drama department, played the upright bass in the orchestra, participated in a myriad of sports, and voiced extremely ambitious goals for my life beyond high school. I appeared as if I had it all. The problem was that I was also bullied, experienced severe bouts of depression, meditated on suicidal thoughts daily, and had a drinking problem. I brought my sixteenth birthday in with a drink in my hand, unbeknownst to my mother, who I fought with often, and my father.

 

In 2014, I was inspired to found The Colorfully Candid Paradigm, Incorporated (Colorfully Candid) for young ladies like myself. The CCP provides programs for young ladies, ages 11-18, to speak candidly about the issues they face on a day to day basis. Colorfully Candid seeks to teach young women how to display emotional strength with one another by empowering the girls we work with to communicate effectively, advocate for themselves appropriately, and work cooperatively with others. 

 

It is our belief that we accomplish more when we work together, and all of our programming supports interdependence. Confidence in our own abilities limits the need to compare ourselves with others. The support system that the girls gain through the programs Colorfully Candid offers influences each participant‘s growth in school, home, and social settings. We often invite and encourage mothers to participate as well, because young ladies, between the ages of 11-18, are affected greatly by their ability to communicate with the maternal figures in their lives.

 

Colorfully Candid has experienced significant success in the past three years as a burgeoning non profit. In 2014, The CCP hosted a retreat to Mount Charleston. Thirty five young ladies and 7 mothers got a chance to break away from the every day routine and spend quality time together in activities that promoted reflection and cooperation. In 2015, The CCP partnered with A Way With Words, LLC to bring the Church Girls Rule Leadership Camp, held at Santa Fe Station Casino and Truth Christian Ministries International. Seventy young ladies were introduced to careers in science, math, banking, public service, and education. In addition to facilitating more mother daughter events and book clubs in 2017, we are looking forward to hosting the third retreat to the mountains, to enhance the emotional intelligence of young ladies in middle and high school throughout underserved communities by equipping participants with the tools to effectively handle stress and to succeed in the classroom.

So many young ladies in Nevada need the opportunity to speak candidly about the issues they are facing today in a world of cyber bullying and peer pressure, free from the fear of negative ramifications. It is our goal to increase the number of opportunities we have to interact with the young ladies in the state of Nevada to ensure that they recognize the positive alternatives at hand when experiencing stress. Please help us remind the future leaders of our state that they will be able to press past the overwhelming expectations, the fear, the depression, and the addictions they may have developed to successfully lead our schools, businesses and government.
