Founded in 1916, the Columbia County Historical Society Museum & Library collects, preserves, and interprets the history, heritage, and culture of Columbia County, New York, and serves residents of all eighteen towns and the city of Hudson.
The Columbia County Historical Society is comprised of a complex of house museums, genealogical archives, research library, museum, and award-winning scholarly magazine dedicated to interpreting and preserving the history and culture of Columbia County, New York, through its properties, collections and publications: the CCHS Museum, the National Historic Landmark Luykas Van Alen House (1737), Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse (c. 1850), the James Vanderpoel 'House of History'(c. 1819), Barbara P. Rielly Memorial Research & Genealogical Library, and a biannual magazine, ‘Columbia County History & Heritage’.
The small Dutch Van Alen house was described by former Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller as “one of the most authentic examples of early Dutch architecture remaining in the United States.”
During the last fifty years, we have restored and shared this very special National Historic Landmark with thousands of visitors and students who now better understand life on an 18th century upstate New York farm. Our cultural and historical programs and lectures on Dutch cooking and gardens; author Washington Irving; the Dutch Colony of New Netherland, and archaeology at the Van Alen house are all very popular.
For one hundred years, thousands of people from all across Columbia County and beyond have enjoyed our exhibitions, education programs and research library.
Our research library holds important and unique genealogical materials and hundreds of maps and photographs, along with our collections of photographs and other archival material.
We teach school children about Columbia County's rich heritage, we help new residents trace the histories of their properties, and those living elsewhere rediscover their Columbia County roots. We serve residents of all eighteen towns, the city of Hudson, and visitors from all over the nation.
At a time when public and private grants are fewer and more competitive, individual generosity of our members and friends is vitally important.
Your support has helped establish us as a cultural anchor in the county. Thank you! Your tax-deductible gift to the Columbia County Historical Society endorses the valuable work we do.
