The holidays are among us and this year – as we do every year – the Domestic Violence Resource Center is focused on helping domestic violence survivors and their families work to rebuild safe and hopeful lives. We’re grateful for the many brave individuals we have the opportunity of serving, and also for you – whose support helps to make our work possible. To increase awareness of this work, please consider sharing information about our holiday campaign and encourage others to participate.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign (November 25-December 10) is a strategy for individuals and groups around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of gender-based violence. This year’s campaign focuses on the issue of ending femicide. According to the World Health Organization, “Femicide is generally understood to involve intentional murder of women because they are women, but broader definitions include any killings of women or girls.”

Significantly, Nevada is ranked in the top ten in the nation for the number of women murdered by men for eight consecutive years (Violence Policy Center, 2019 homicide data). The statistics are staggering and only represent reported femicide cases, unfortunately, there are so many cases that go unreported.

The key to addressing the epidemic starts with awareness and education. This year the Domestic Violence Resource Center is partnering with the Zonta Club of Reno to encourage the community to create short videos that will be compiled into a collage and posted on social media each day of the 16 Day Campaign.

There are two ways to participate:

One- Anyone can make a 15-20 second video completing the sentence,
"I stand against gender-based violence because...".
Domestic Violence Resource Center Development Coordinator, Alyssa Ropell's response to the first prompt.
Two-  We’d like to showcase (1-2 minute) survivor stories, lessons learned as a survivor, victim advocate/volunteer testimonies, service providers’ community impacts, and any others who might want to lend their voice to the conversation.

Together, these videos will help tell a story of why it is so important to get the issue of gender violence out in the open. These are not intended to be professional videos, but honest statements from individuals who have been affected and/or help provide services in the domestic violence field.

The deadline to submit your video is December 1st. Please upload your video here: t.ly/4hFL
