Common Good Press, aka CATALYST is a monthly non-profit magazine that has served as Salt Lake City's resource for creative living since 1982.

THE ENVIRONMENT | ARTS | CULTURE | HEALTH | SUSTAINABILITY

Founded in 1982, by Greta deJong, the CATALYST manifesto declared its intent to be:

  • "A monthly herald of regional events and services whose focus is on new ways of being.
  • A networking medium for agents of creative change.
  • A forum for personal and social transformation.
  • A call for responsible commitment to action on behalf of our planet and its people."

In October 2016, CATALYST Magazine was officially approved nonprofit status under the new organization name, Common Good Press! After 35 years as an LLC, we are now a 501c3. While we still uphold the intent of our manifesto from '82, our streamlined mission is to:

"Common Good Press explores and promotes ideas, events and resources that support conscious, empowered living for people and the planet."

Why nonprofit?

We started the process of becoming a nonprofit in November 2015 when we realized that CATALYST Magazine had to expand to more than just a magazine to continue to function as a hub for the vibrant, community it has served for 35 years. Events, workshops, festivals; in addition to a publication are what we aim to expand to so we can continue to nurture the community we hold so dearly!

After talking to many people in the community about the potential fate of the magazine, the message was clear, "CATALYST can't go away, it's too much of an institution in our community."

Other people in the community have also shared with us their praise for CATALYST:

"CATALYST is my Bible. I look forward to it each month."

           - Carol E. Nelson

"When I moved to Utah, CATALYST helped me realize there are people like me living here!"

           - Amanda Gunnell Lee

"Greta is the only editor who I trust to edit my writing. After she edits my work, it always comes back with a better result than when it started."

           - Rocky Anderson (Former Mayor of SLC)

We continue to grow organically and with a heart, as we launch into the nonprofit sector. We couldn't have done the last 35 years with out our community!
