Community Legal Services

Community Legal Services is an Arizona non-profit law firm providing legal services including direct representation to low-income residents of the Arizona counties of Maricopa, Mohave, La Paz, Yavapai and Yuma to resolve critical, civil legal problems impacting basic human needs for survival.

 

Now 63 years old, Community Legal Services, an Arizona non-profit law firm which was incorporated as the Maricopa County Legal Aid Society in 1952. The name was changed in 1974 to reflect its growing service area of Mohave, Yavapai, Yuma and LaPaz Counties, in addition to Maricopa.

CLS’ services include brief advice and counsel, document review/preparation and direct representation in courts of law and administrative hearings.

CLS provides legal services to our clients to...

• protect persons against homelessness -  landlord/tenant disputes, illegal evictions, lock-outs, utility shut-offs, habitability issues, illegal foreclosures, violations of Fair Housing (discrimination), etc.

 

•  protect the personal safety of vulnerable family members against domestic violence, abuse and exploitation

 

• obtain and maintain access to certain government programs needed to support clients’ families, i.e. Nutrition Assistance (formerly Food Stamps), Public Housing Vouchers, TANF, Unemployment Insurance, health care, etc., all of which were developed to provide help in tough economic times.

 

• protect our clients’ already limited incomes against fraudulent consumer practices.

 

Each year, CLS helps more than 15,000 individuals directly, and even more through Community OutReach and Education events.
