HELPING THE HOMELESS - A COMMUNITY EFFORT
To provide safe, warm overnight sleeping accommodations and hot meals for homeless individuals and families in need between late November and late March.
The Shelter can accommodate up to 20 Adult Men, 9 Adult Women.
The Shelter is physically located at the rear entrance of St. Luke Lutheran Church, 1100 N. Main St. , Culpeper, VA 22701
The Shelter is a collaborative effort of about 20 area Churches, with the support of hundreds of volunteers, and an assortment of local businesses and organizations. During the 2018/19 winter season, the shelter provided over 2500 bed nights and over 8000 meals, serving an average nightly attendance of 27 people.
Volunteers to chaperone (overnight) and to serve meals are always needed and welcome. Donations of certain food items are also welcome, and of course monetary donations are not only welcome but essential to keeping the shelter operating. For some of those served by the Shelter, it is a stepping stone, allowing them time and opportunity to find employment and to gain housing. For others, it is a respite from the cold weather and living on the streets. Our goal is to not only keep them warm and well fed during the cold months, but to help them connect to other services and resources so that they are better off when they depart than they were when they arrived.
Our best testimonial is in a video on our Facebook page. Two shelter guests speak about their experience while at the shelter. Both obtained housing and employment at the end of their stay at the shelter.
