Celebrating 30 Years

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Culture Shock San Diego. We are celebrating our 30th birthday by reflecting on the last three decades and eagerly looking towards the future. 

Since 1993, Culture Shock has used the power of Hip Hop music and dance to cultivate self-worth and mutual respect for dancers of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and abilities. We provide numerous classes, rehearsals, and performances that increase physical strength, improve mental stability and foster human connections for over 40,000 San Diego residents and visitors each year.

Leaving A Legacy

Culture Shock San Diego was founded in 1993 by dancer and choreographer, Angie Bunch. Bunch gathered a group of Hip Hop street dancers to develop and perform intricate choreography combining the best of the raw, new forms of dance burgeoning onto the scene. Adding breaking to this mix in the late 1990s, Culture Shock gave Hip Hop a voice and platform to grow. Several generations of dancers have been inspired and influenced by Culture Shock’s approach ever since.

In 2011, a group of alumni dancers gathered after rehearsal at local restaurant in North Park. As they ate their burritos, they quickly realized that Culture Shock was a foundation for so many dance teams in the years since they had been on troupe. One alumni pulled out on a napkin and wrote down everything that stemmed from Culture Shock or through connections with Culture Shock alumni. It has been 12 years since this napkin was created, and we continue to expand our reach. 

Culture Shock in 2023

Currently, our dance education and training is offered through two components. Culture Shock's Training Academy offers various types of classes with class offerings to a variety of skill levels. Culture Shock's Troupe Program is geared towards youth and adult dancers that would like more intensive training and opportunities for performances, and competitions.

• Mini Shock for children ages 6-9

• Mighty Shock for youth ages 10-13

• Future Shock for youth ages 14-17

• Culture Shock professional young adult dancers age 18+

• Afta Shock high-energy, old-school hip-hop dance instruction for ages 25+
