During the COVID-19 pandemic, CURE is actively working to support families impacted the crisis by:

  • Addressing emergency financial needs by paying for housing, food, utilities, medical bills, and other basic expenses.
  • Delivering boxed meals, snack bags, and other food to parents isolated with their child in hospital rooms.
  • Making our counseling program easier to access through telemental health sessions and waiving co-pays.
  • Covering the cost of hotel lodging for families who must travel from far away to seek treatment.

CURE Childhood Cancer was founded in 1975 at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. At the time, the survival rate for children diagnosed with cancer was less than 10%. Since then, research has brought the overall survival rate above 80%. While that is good progress, it isn’t good enough because one in five children are still lost to the disease and it remains that number one cause of death by disease for children. CURE is working to change that.

RESEARCH

Research is the key to unlocking breakthroughs that will save the lives of children diagnosed with cancer. Not only will research help children survive their diagnosis, but by developing safer and less toxic treatments, it will also help children who do survive to experience fewer harmful side effects and live their lives to the fullest. In the past 10 years, CURE has invested $25 million in innovative research at leading pediatric cancer research institutions across the nation. Our highest priority is our focus on precision medicine, treatment targeted at tumor-driving genes, which is already yielding significant results for children with recurrent and hard to treat cancers.

PATIENT AND FAMILY SUPPORT

Our hope is that the research we fund leads us to a safe and effective treatment for all children diagnosed with cancer. But until there is a cure, there’s CURE. The second part of our mission is to support families devastated by a childhood cancer diagnosis through programs designed to meet a family’s emotional, practical, and financial needs quickly and appropriately. CURE is in the hospitals serving meals several days a week, we provide emergency financial support to ease the burden of families in the fight, and we offer professional counseling to patients and family members. We also offer bereavement support for families who must deal with unimaginable loss. These are only a few of the ways we serve cancer patients and their families. CURE’s goal of being an ever-present help to families in crisis encompasses dozens of services designed to lighten the load of the families and make sure they know they aren’t alone.

CURE’s unwavering support is available from diagnosis until we are no longer needed.
