Dabney Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Inc.

We maintain the doctrinal belief that Jesus is the Christ and that eternal salvation belongs to all who confess Him as their Savior. We are dedicated to preserving the rich heritage and historic landmark sites of Dabney Hill Freedom Colony by building partnerships, encouraging economic development, and reimagining a cultural destination for descendants and future generations, and the community.

Dabney Hill Missionary Baptist Church Inc. is a nonprofit organization established in 2023 to preserve the cultural heritage of Dabney Hill. Our goal is to raise funds to save and restore the landmark institutions in Dabney Hill Freedom Colony for adaptive reuse by the community. The Dabney Hill Church was established in 1887 by freedmen and is the cornerstone of the early African American settlement founded by freedman Daniel Dabney. The church was built in 1905 and has sustained generations of descendants in the area of spiritual growth since its inception. Freedmen also built a Prince Hall Masonic lodge (circa 1897).

The Dabney Hill community was founded in 1880s by formerly enslaved Daniel Dabney (1815-1882) who had foresight to purchase land for farming families and to build structures that have become landmarks for future generations. The church is a rare example of vernacular architecture built by early African American settlers of Dabney Hill. It collapsed in 2020. The adjacent Prince Hall masonic lodge is one of a few African American lodges that still survive in Texas and that provided benevolent services to the community.
