Danbury Youth Services Inc

Founded in 1969, Danbury Youth Services, Inc. (DYS) is a private, non-profit agency designated as the Youth Services Bureau for the City of Danbury and a licensed psychiatric clinic through the Connecticut Department of Children and Families. Our mission is to strengthen youth and families by fostering hope and teaching skills necessary to lead positive and productive lives, which we carry out through youth development programs, youth employment services and youth and family counseling. 

According to the Fairfield County Community Foundation, 13.7% of Danbury children under the age of 18 live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level. DYS addresses the critical needs of these families by providing comprehensive services with demonstrated results. Each year, our staff of licensed clinicians and specialists work with 600 to 800 at-risk youth and families in the areas of substance abuse prevention, social skills development, parenting, crisis intervention and family therapy. No client is turned away.  

Our programs work. Participants show a 94% increase in reading grades, an 85% increase in self-esteem and an 85% increase in community involvement and leadership. And these results reach beyond the families we help, contributing to a stronger community at large. Empowering youth to do well in school and reach their life goals reduces delinquency, drug use and reliance on social services.  At the same time, it raises standardized test scores, which in turn raises local property values by attracting more families to Danbury.
