Could you imagine living in a place where temperatures can reach over 111 degrees? What if you were forced to directly live under these conditions because you had no place to call home? What if you not only struggled to find a place to live but were forced to stay in constant transition with your children in tow because you did not have a place of your own?

In Arizona, housing continues to be the most urgent need for survivors of domestic violence with 223 requests for housing services unmet on a single day. The lack of available housing provides the means for re-victimization (and perpetration) as survivors and their children find themselves homeless or "couch-surfing" due to lack of availability in shelters and transitional homes filled to maximum capacity. Many also experience difficulty qualifying for a personal residence, due to low-income or poor credit history, often stemmed from economic abuse, including those who come to their end of stay at shelters. Such challenges cause, parents to find themselves in compromising situations to provide for their families, which can result in re-victimization, or even perpetration (of abuse).

At Dee DeeCilla Comfort Center, we receive countless heartbreaking calls from single moms who just want to provide a safe place to live for their children, but due to abusive relationships, they have found themselves homeless struggling to get on their feet. These moms are ambitious and eager with hopes and dreams of completing their education or even starting a business, yet how can they when each night they are plagued with wondering where their children will live and how they will eat. They want a place their children can safely play outside without fear of being in unsafe zones where they are vulnerable or subject to abuse, especially since many of these children have witnessed the abuse of their mothers.  It takes courage and strength to leave an abusive relationship, knowing that when you leave your abuser you are at a higher risk rate of losing your life; yet, these women have gathered just enough gumption to try to break free to save the life of their own and create a better life for their children.
