The Foundation, a 501(c) 3 organization, is a public/private partner working with D.C. Public Schools and the D.C. Apprenticeship Council to support the Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo Senior High School and the District of Columbia Apprenticeship Academy. The Foundation strives to make skilled trades education and training accessible to residents of the District of Columbia.
The DC Students Construction Trades Foundation works with District of Columbia Public Schools Career and Technical Education to provide industry-accredited courses in carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and other technical specialties for students in the Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo Senior High School. The Foundation also administers internships, scholarships and job placement opportunities for Academy students.
The Academy of Construction and Design maintains a 90 percent high school graduation rate. One-third of graduates land industry jobs and become eligible for training and licensing as journey craft professionals. Two-thirds of graduates enroll in college programs leading to degrees in architecture, construction management, engineering and other fields.
Our Mission
We believe in the ability of every person to succeed when they can identify clearer pathways into real careers. We serve District residents at many levels to:
Bringing Skilled Trades Back to District Schools
Working with DCPS Career and Technical Education, the Foundation launched the Academy of Construction and Design at Cardozo Senior High School in 2005, with 43 students. In 2007, with increasing enrollment, the Foundation renovated the Academy’s instructional space, installed technology-based training labs and created the school district’s first new construction education classrooms in nearly 40 years. Now, the Academy enrolls more than 100 students each year and admission is open district wide.
Your Support Makes a Difference
Even with a strong record of success, programs like the Academy of Construction and Design are now threatened by school budget cuts and reduced funding. The role of CTE has changed dramatically. Technical education engages students – from highly motivated youth to those at risk for truancy and dropping out – and spurs them on to further learning beyond high school, either on the job or in college study. Your generous contribution in any amount helps students overcome challenges and meet the future in skilled careers. Thank you for supporting their success!
