We  provides  outreach services to homeless individuals such as veterans, ex-felons, men, women, elderly and their families, with emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, and supportive services, such as, food distribution, job training, mental illness referrals, substance abuse workshops, physical health services, financial assistance and counseling, family reunification and assistance in accessing benefits such as Social Supplement benefits and Veterans Compensation.

In the near future, we hope to build new permanent housing units for chronically homeless persons, increasing the percentage of people moving from transitional to permanent housing, and increasing the percentage of homeless persons staying in permanent housing, and increasing the percentage of homeless persons employed in Central Alabama.

DIM will accomplish its goals by working closely with its Community Partners; the Macon County Commission, the City of Tuskegee, the Department of Human Resources, Veterans Administration, Montgomery Area Food Bank, East Alabama Mental Health, the Alabama Rural Coalition for the Homeless (ARCH), Tuskegee Housing Authority, Southeast Alabama Self-Help Association (SEASHA) and Alabama Employment Agencies.

Since April 2007  DIM has provided temporary/transitional housing, food, clothing, counseling, and transportation, for more than 150 homeless women and men including veterans. From April 2007 until now we have successfully transitioned 50 homeless individuals into permanent housing throughout the community and distributed 500,000 pounds of food to over 500 families in Macon County.

DIM members in our organization who volunteer many hours of service to the community  are from all walks of life.

DIM is the only transitional/emergency shelter in Macon County. In addition to caring for the homeless and those struggling with substance abuse, we provide services for those who have become unemployed, with rental assistance, utility assistance and re-housing assistance, if they are evicted from their homes. We provide these services through partnerships and relationships with local governments, local utilities boards, local businesses, and landlords. Partnerships which we have established encourage our local community and the stakeholders to help one another to change old attitudes and open discussions to solve and address the needs of the community.

Our Organizational activities and services are on-going, they will not end as long as homeless, poverty, unemployment, and substance abuse exists in our community.

DIM is an on-going 24 hour, seven day a week, year round operation.  Clients are accepted based on beds available and a willingness and commitment to make positive changes in their lives and the community.
